We were right to stand aside for most of the initial looting. We did not need to be seen strafing hysterical crowds, even with rubber bullets. However, it is good that as the initial frenzy dies down, we actively discourage lawlessness. As it happens, most looters desist when challenged, without the necessity of a show of strength, apart from warnings. Certainly, common criminals should be treated more harshly, now that things are settling down, but I like the idea of empowering the local police as much as possible. The demonstrators are another matter. So far, as long as they are peaceful, they are tolerated, which is the right response. However, the shut down a demonstration in Takrit because of gunfire, which seems right to me. We have showed that we have the firepower, and that we can use it. We do not want to exacerbate confrontations.........

Heard non other than Tom Friedman on Imus last week suggesting that a few more pics of US rifles to the heads of some bank robbers would go a long way toward securing the peace.

Well, after that shooting yesterday that killed 13 Iraqis, I am left begging the question as to why the US military has not put out the word that anyone seen carrying a firearm at a demonstration will be arrested, or "may" even be shot.

Get the guns off the streets and back in their houses.. This is STILL a stabilization mission and the entire country is STILL effectively under US martial law.

In addition, we should get that Iraqi TV network reporting on these events in a manner that will instruct the average Iraqi that, while we support your right to demonstrate to display your opinions, we will not contenance the display, or use of, firearms during these demonstrations.
