In 1999, the price went from about $13.50 to $38 when Opec cut production 4.3 million bbl/day. In 2000, Clinton released 30 million bbl, and OPEC overproduced and the price dropped from $38 to $16 in less than 1 year (also weak demand). My point is that it will be easy once production capacity is developed to influence world oil prices, and the US will benefit (along with everybody else, but since we soak up 30-40% of the energy, we'll benefit proportionally more). Skeets, you are so excitable! As I said, I don't believe the US will steal any Iraqi oil; the simple effect of overproduction will benefit us enormously. Sorry the numbers look so large, but when the US spends $219 billion a year @ $30 per barrel, price swings have a great impact. Even $1/barrel drop saves the US $7.3 billion in energy costs per year (US Oil reserves also receive less income from this effect). Go out 10 years, as I think they believe they can, and you have 73 billion dollars savings per dollar of cheaper crude. I think attaining a $5 per barrel reduction in long term costs will not be difficult based on the chart of events, but whatever, it's in the future. BTW, these are numbers I believe planners used in rationalizing the need for the war to control; I do not believe they will play out as expected. I don't hate Bush at all. There is virtually nothing about his actions as President that I admire, and the cabal whose foreign policy states they believe in premptive wars and to crush any and all comers who might someday threaten American hegemony, who do all they can to lower environmental quality for it's citizens, who seek another large tax cut primarily for the wealthy, who say they will "shore up" social security when in fact there is no money in the trust fund, still, who are working on the Patriot II act, and much more... It remains to be seen about whether or not Iraqi's will be better off in the long run, but I believe they certainly are right now. I believe that they will be better off in the long run, I certainly hope so at least. eia.doe.gov tfc-charts.com
