Internap Announces New Managed Firewall Solution Tuesday April 29, 7:07 am ET
New Offering Ideal for Mid-Sized Enterprise Networks and Based on Cisco IOS Firewall Software
LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 29, 2003--Internap® Network Services Corporation (Nasdaq:INAP - News), the leading provider of performance-based routing services over the Internet, announced today it will offer a robust managed firewall solution that utilizes routers and software from Cisco Systems.
Today's announcement delivers a competitively priced, advanced network monitoring and security solution to mid-sized businesses. Internap's Managed Security Service (MSS) -- Integrated Firewall solution will be priced for mid-sized enterprises that need to protect email, web servers or corporate networks from hacker attacks or unauthorized intrusion.
The service will be based on Cisco IOS® Firewall software that is monitored by professionals in Internap's Network Operations Centers (NOCs) 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Internap's new managed firewall service extends its suite of Cisco Powered Network services. Internap benefits from its Cisco Powered Network designation through joint marketing and technology sharing activities with Cisco.
"As businesses strive to lower capital expenses and increase productivity, managed security services offer the opportunity to focus on core competencies while partnering with communications experts such as Internap," said Jeff Zanardi, director of marketing for Cisco Systems.
"As a Cisco Powered Network provider, we look forward to continuing our work with Internap on joint marketing and technology sharing activities."
"When coupled with Internap's superior Internet connectivity solutions, this new offer also brings a dramatically superior level of network security, simplicity and affordability to the mid-sized enterprise market," said Dave Abrahamson, Vice President of Sales and Chief Marketing Officer at Internap.
"Internap's unique 'network-of-networks' architecture, coupled with our new managed security service, gives our NOCs the broadest possible visibility into the operations of Internet traffic, so when we see an attack originating from a particular location, our engineers can immediately take steps to shut it down."
The Cisco IOS Firewall integrates robust firewall functionality for the network perimeter by setting up a "DMZ" against outside attacks. It adds functionality such as stateful, application-based filtering; defense against network attacks; Java blocking; and real-time monitoring.
Key features of Internap's new MSS -- Integrated Firewall offering include:
· Context-based access control (CBAC): Provides internal users with secure, per-application-based access control for all traffic across perimeters between private enterprise networks and the Internet. · Denial of service detection and prevention: Defends and protects router resources against common attacks by checking packet headers and dropping suspicious packets. · Audit trail: Details transactions by recording time stamp, source host, destination host, ports, duration and total number of bytes transmitted.
· Event logging: Allows administrators to track potential security breaches or other nonstandard activities in real time by logging system error message output to a console terminal or syslog server, setting severity levels, and recording other parameters. · Basic and advanced traffic filtering: Used in conjunction with CBAC, offers standard and extended access control lists (ACLs), which are applied to specific network segments and define which traffic passes through a network segment. Lock and key-dynamic ACLs grant temporary access through the firewall upon user identification (username/password).
· Attack detection and defense for email servers: This intrusion detection capability is designed specifically for SMTP-oriented attacks.
Internap's business model, which utilizes the backbones of all major Internet carriers, provides industry leading service levels to meet the performance-driven needs of enterprises that use the Internet today.
Internap employs proprietary intelligent routing technology to monitor and route its customers' traffic, based on pre-set, customer-selected criteria.
This "network-agnostic, customer-centric" approach means Internap can provide a premium managed network solution that more traditional carriers, with a vested business interest in maintaining or boosting traffic levels on their own networks, cannot.
The addition of a comprehensive, Cisco Powered managed firewall solution further rounds out Internap's already robust Internet services portfolio.
