"He said that after evening prayers a group of young men began demonstrating against the troops' presence in the largely Sunni Muslim town."

And they have every right to protest, however, what might be missing from the Reuters and NYT report is details about what the mullah(s) were saying at the evening prayers. I don't want to or I am reluctant and unable to justify the killings, but I suspect that local religious leaders are jockeying for their personal slice of the emerging power pie and if they're whipping up their parishioners (or whatever they're called) into a frenzy of hate, they too need to bear some responsibility for what has occurred.

Certainly the news is not good.
