Midland city officials reluctantly made public Wednesday a 1963 report of a fatal accident involving a teen-ager who would become the wife of presidential contender George W. Bush.

The Texas Attorney General Wednesday directed Midland officials to release the report, which indicated the then-17-year-old Laura Welch ran a stop sign in the accident that claimed the life of her teen-age boyfriend.

Midland City Attorney Keith Stretcher faxed a copy of the accident report to the Odessa American.

According to the Nov. 6, 1963, accident report, Welch was driving a 1963 Chevrolet sedan east on FM 868 when she ran a stop sign and collided with a 1962 Chevrolet Corvair driven by her boyfriend, Michael Douglas.

According to news reports at the time of the accident, Douglas died at the scene.

The Odessa American sought the report through FOI letters after media outlets in other states published some details of the 1963 accident.

Initial news reports indicated Bush was talking to a friend while she was driving to a party in her hometown of Midland. At FM 868 and Highway 349, she apparently failed to see the stop sign or Douglas’ vehicle.

The report made public Wednesday indicates the accident occurred at 8:08 p.m., in clear weather and on dry pavement. The legal speed limit leading up to the intersection was 55, and the report indicates Bush’s vehicle was traveling at near the speed limit when the collision occurred.
