TigerPaw could while away the hours
Conferrin' with the flowers
Consultin' with the rain
And his head, he'd be scratchin'

I certainly don't disagree with you. If we were trying to help people who are being tortured or wantonly killed, we should have started in Africa, where we could have really helped avert some terrible human tragedies, that are occurring on a scale much greater than that in Iraq.

even if the U.S. sucessfully seizes the oil fields of Iraq, what was really gained? There was never any doubt that the oil would be sold by someone anyway and find it's way into your gas tank.

You may have noticed that oil is the deepest-rooted dependency infrastructure on this planet. Everybody is a junkie, except a few countries like France, which generates 80% of its power need from nuclear power plants.

The US had everything - technological and military superiority, economic size, etc - everything except the oil, on which they were in a symbiotic co-dependence with Saudi Arabia.

With control over Iraq's oil, not only does the US never need fear another ambargo, but can break OPEC and control the price & supply of oil. Oh and of course, whoever controls the supply controls the addict...
