I agree that we need insurance. There's just very little incentive to price shop or consider the ramifications of anything. It's the same socialization that plagues the air carriers so that the weak do not fail or improve enough and/or new stronger ones cannot rise up easily and take their places because of all the subsidies.

It all seems to be running open loop right now.

The system you advocated is the one I choose -- I pay a share of the premium ($1300 per year) and have $750 of medical/prescription deductibles and also pay at least 10% after that. So in a good year, I still pay about $225-250 per month out of pocket. My employer is paying $415/mo right now, so I'm up to about 40% of the cost already (and have no complaints).

In exchange for more out-of-pocket, I get the most choice of all offered plans.
