I agree that sex roles are most important in personal interaction between the sexes, where it is appropriate to heighten consciousness of difference. When going out with men, women still want to feminize their image, by and large, and men want to make demonstration of manhood (cool car, insouciance about the check, show offiness when playing games of skill, and so on). Sex differences, in other words, are still most relevant when Tom Sawyer is trying to impress Becky Thatcher, and may be somewhat suppressed when sex is not relevant to the role one is performing. But people still tend to cherish their residual sexuality, in the sense of liking to feel especially masculine or feminine.......
