I was arguing that the four countries may be just the seed and the eventual goal is to involve the entire EU, which, after its expansion, will have a GDP considerably higher than the US, and a savings rate more than double that of the US. Therefore, the potential for military power of a successfully integrated EU is considerable.

Agreed, and also agreed that it would be interesting, perhaps helpful, do discuss the ramifications.

My perception is that somehow all of this occurred when we of the chattering classes were sort of looking the other way.

I guess if you are in the military, invicibility is something very nice, and not scary at all.

We sort of take using our power for good for granted, because we believe that we are good guys.

That part seems to be debatable.

Personally I don't have a problem believing that we are the good guys. It's the rest of it that sort of surprises me.
