A public corruption task force searched the offices of Miami-Dade County's teacher's union on Tuesday, scouring computers and documents and leaving with boxes of records, officials said.

FBI agents and Miami-Dade County police officers went to the United Teachers of Dade offices to serve a sealed search warrant Tuesday morning and remained there well into the afternoon, FBI spokeswoman Judy Orihuela said.

No one was arrested in the search, Orihuela said. The FBI and the U.S. Attorney's Office would not comment further on the search or investigation.

Annette Katz, director of communications for the union, said the UTD was cooperating with the investigation.

``We were just as surprised as anyone when the FBI began their search,'' Katz said.

Agents made photocopies of some documents and left with others that were financial in nature, Katz said. They also searched some computers, she said.

The union, led by President Pat Tornillo since the early 1970s, represents teachers in the fourth-largest school district in the country.

After learning of the search, the Florida Education Association requested that the American Federation of Teachers, one of the union's national affiliates, place it under a temporary administrator.

Such a move would allow the FEA, AFT and the National Education Association to monitor and manage the union's operations until the matter is resolved.

Do I agree completely with these people? No. But the organization appears to be offering a creative, alternate view of the universe which the country needs badly right now.
