But I do blame the civilian leaders who put them in that position, who believe in Force as a First Resort, and who didn't have an exit strategy when they sent the soldiers in.


Two points: First, I'll quote you back to yourself the next time such a shooting involves Israelis because I have never heard you acknowledge that Israeli soldiers should not be blamed for defending themselves (which they do with greater restraint than US soldiers) when they are shot at.

Second, you speak as if just because they were there, it is therefore reasonable to conclude that their leadership believed in "Force as First Resort" and put them there without trying other things first. In both cases, far, very far, from the truth. In both cases, many people worked hard precisely to force those troops to be in exactly that situation despite the efforts of their governments to avoid it.
