In my little corner of the world, I see our educational system struggling under the weight of increasingly needy students, coming from homes that are not enriched, and dramatic cuts in money. We had a fantastic program in our county called CAPI that connected college English teachers with high school teachers, so that we high school teachers could better teach what was needed at the college level, so not quite so many of our students needed remedial classes upon entering college. It was a cheap and successful program- but there will be no more money for it. That's only one tiny example. There isn't much waste that I can see in our high school- if there was any it was cut in the early 90's when our budgets were whacked the first time. Now what is being cut is vital. We need more time in the school day, imo, not less. I think high schoolers should go to school 9-5- it would keep them out of trouble, and they'd be able to start learning later, since research shows that kids learn better a little later in the day than most schools start. My daughter's high school day starts at 7:00 am- because she is in band. EVERYTHING we know about learning suggests that kids should not be forced to be up this early. It is true that adults need to be, but education is not supposed to be a hazing- we're supposed to be fostering a love of learning, teaching kids all the skills we can, and trying to make sure they keep attending high school. IMO much of the structure of high school works against all three of those very important goals. end of rant :-)
