Nadine, Franco/Russian alliance takes us back to czarist times. Then it was to offset germany. Now perhaps with germany included its designed to offset uncle sam. The french live in fantasyland. The Germans will abandon this once schroeder is defeated. The Russians under putin are opportunists and i still believe will end up back with the US and UK at some point. Russian interests too global and war on terror is fought withing their borders and borders of old USSR. Perhaps Putin is trolling for future votes here, given the russian peoples opposition of our iraq invasion. Appearing independent of US is key to him so he can pursue his main goal of allying himself with, yes the same US. Just hypothesising here. mike
