<<Muslim religious leaders in Fallujah ask US troops to pull back>>

FALLUJAH, Iraq (AFP) - Muslim religious leaders in Fallujah, where three people were shot dead by US troops in a second day of bloodshed, told AFP they have asked US forces to pull back from the city.

"We met an hour ago and we told the Americans to withdraw at least to the outskirts because they are a bad influence on our people," said Sheikh Waga Ali al-Mohammadi, whom residents named as the city's top religious leader.

"Fallujah is known as a centre of Islam. We care about religion, we care about our honour and our land," he said Wednesday. "We told them things will get worse and worse."

<<the imams are in control. The gunmen are theirs, the hospitals are theirs, the banks are theirs, the streets are theirs. They have filled a vacuum, and they have lost no time in letting their long-repressed followers know that there is no reason to thank the American invaders and that the time has come to build an Islamic republic.>>
