tippet > for the sake of argument it were true -- what would be the motivation??

To me, that's self-evident.

1. To show the whole world that the US is actually the "victim" in a dastardly "terrorist" attack.

2. To firmly cement the US and Israel together in a mutual "war against terrorism"

3. To upset, frighten and worry the American people who, for these reasons, will be solidly behind whatever the US administration tells them or decides to do.

4. There were so many things which were strange, even phoney, about the events of 911 that it's hard to believe they all came about by chance or motivated by "stone-age" fanatics from caves in Afghanistan.

Thus the question is asked, "What is the war against terrorism?" In fact, one has to ask the question, "Who benefits from 911?"

In a nutshell, the "war against terrorism" is the bringing about of "regime change" in the various countries of the Mid East, especially those which have oil and/or which Israel regards as a threat. The purpose of this is clearly to advance US and Israeli economic and geopolitical interests, firstly, in the Mid East, and then, wherever it suits them.

And it is this which, in my opinion, was enabled by the events of 911.

> Doesn't a terrible bungling and negligence and an attempt to cover up that negligence seem more likely --

That is a possibility which has to be considered. But it is strange how the bungling and negligence has enabled exactly what the US wished to achieve --- the right to launch pre-emptive strikes against anyone it chooses, and for any pretext. In other words, 911 has conferred on the US a permanent "victim" status, just like the one Israel has as result of the terrorist attacks on it and which enable Israel never to have to sit at a negotiating table except on its own terms.

> but it is one thing to intercept and another to shoot down a commercial airliner

The fighters were not even launched until the "attacks" were virtually over which is in complete violation of standing instructions which demands that fighters are scrambled in minutes of any strange event on the radar. For this reason, there had to be orders from the "top" countermanding the standing instructions. There is also some evidence that the plane which crashed in the countryside in Pennsylvania was actually shot down.

>Government and the airlines were both terribly negligent. How could one conclude otherwise (unless one believes conspiracy), but look at the result -- nobody big even lost their jobs.

There wasn't even an inquiry. Think of that. Further, all the debris, steel etc from the WTCs was shipped off to wherever ASAP clearly (IMO) so that no-one could "sniff out" any "undesirable" evidence.

>Quite amazing, even for the average US citizen, IMO

The expression "shock and awe" comes to mind. But, let me add, what has happened was amazing for all of us.

Hi Tippet,

Re: I've looked at some of this conspiracy stuff -- the idea seems inconceivable to me,

Actually, the Department of Defense wrote a plan in 1961 called Operation Northwoods that described in great detail how to motivate the American public to accept an invigoration of the military aggression of the DoD by using subterfuge to fool the populace. Here's my dossier on this remarkable document:

Message 17525586

All of the psychological effects on the American public from the tragedy of 9/11 were anticipated in Operation Northwoods.

Remember, one man's conspiracy theory may well be another man's business plan. :)

To the contrary, inside the FBI, the supervisor who actively suppressed the field office level investigations in the summer of 2001 by Agent Colleen Rowley in Minneapolis and Agent Wright in Phoenix was a man by the name of David Frasca. He declined requests for FISA subpoenas by agents and demanded the agents look away from investigating foreign nationals at flight schools.

What happened to Frasca? He was rewarded with a promotion and a raise for a job well done.

Curious. Isn't it.
