Chemical weapon inspection concludes in Pakistani fertilizer plant

(Updated at 2145 PST)

KARACHI: Inspectors from a global chemical weapons watchdog expressed satisfaction Wednesday with the operations at a Pakistani fertilizer plant, a Pakistani official said.

A team of experts from The Hague-based Organisation for Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) conducted the routine inspection of the FFC Jordan Fertilizer Company Ltd. under the guidelines of the Chemical Weapons Convention, said foreign office official Tipu Sultan, and "the result was good."

"The inspection was very good, the result was good and we are happy with it, as I found the inspection team fully satisfied," Sultan told reporters at the plant, some 45 kilometers (27 miles) northeast of Karachi.

"They inspected the plant very closely and were quick, smooth and professional in their evaluation." Under the guidelines of the CWC, member states agree not to use chemical weapons and are required to submit their manufacturing facilities to regular inspections to ensure they are not producing chemical weapons.
