ChinaNex on WCDMA in China

(Today) May 7, 2003

>> WCDMA seems to be the front runner for China if the government decides to launch 3G service, many in the industry believe.

Technically, WCDMA is based on GSM, the predominant cellphone service in China, which will enable smooth migration while maintain network compatibility. Other evidence includes a recent test organized by MII which was exclusively for WCDMA equipment. Moreover, China needs to make its network open to the world standard to take advantage of roaming and VAS.

Reports say China Telecom is "very likely" to choose WCDMA and TD-SCDMA as the two can be switched over in high-volume service areas. <<
