US Army to expand Grafenwöhr base

Washington/Grafenwöhr: The American Army reinforces its Grafenwöhr base. According to the US Forces 3400 soldiers and their families will move to Grafenwöhr. They come from Hessen bases Giessen and Friedberg which will be closed until 2008. Grafenwöhr is already the biggest US training site in Europe. Now Americans are planning to invest $600 million for a new settlement. The US Army mainly wants to save costs by the move.

Washington/ Grafenwöhr: Die amerikanische Armee verstärkt ihren Standort Grafenwöhr in der Oberpfalz. Nach Angaben der US-Streitkräfte werden 3400 Soldaten und deren Angehörige nach Grafenwöhr verlegt. Sie kommen aus hessischen Stützpunkten Giessen und Friedberg in Hessen, die bis 2008 geschlossen werden sollen. Grafenwöhr ist bereits jetzt der größte amerikanische Truppenübungsplatz in Europa. Jetzt wollen die Amerikaner hier 600 Millionen Dollar in den Bau einer neuen Siedlung insvestieren. Die US-Armee will mit der Truppenverlegung vor allem Kosten sparen.

If there's any one base the US would want to keep open in Germany, it would likely be Grafenwohr.. Considering the amount of money already spent on that primary tank gunnery and maneuver range it would be hard to just say "goodbye" until we were actually kicked out (and the Germans benefit considerably from US $$$ spent there)..

And it sounds like the money being invested is for building more infrastructure to handle troops being relocated there from other posts. So I don't think it will be too difficult for congress to approve those funds.
