Don't see the pedigree in Buddy Gil to go the distance, especially on the notoriously deep track at CD. Again, I like Ats, and have liked him since before the San Felipe. Big, long-strided closer who is being trashed by almost all the gurus covering him. I like that. ;)

Old Colonel E. R. Bradley, who bred and owned four Derby winners, was a great horseman and a big gambler. He had a saying that has stayed with me for many years in handicapping distance races.

"Give me a horse who can do the last two furlongs in .24."

It's not a bad guide. I'll be working over the PP's today with that in mind and give my fearless--or foolish--selections for later ridicule before post time.

Of course, Derby Day happens to be my wife's birthday so there'll be a throwaway exacta and super contribution.

Bob ...

Empire Maker IS the best animal right now ...
but, don't know if he'll be the best Saturday afternoon....

I'm working on some charting stuff that is making me lean towards a couple of possibilities .....
things I normally don't bet ...

well, there is still lotsa time before post....

I'll post a bit more later this morning when I get back upstairs to my desk and papers ....

the way I see it ...
NONE of these horses is a true closer .... none ..
and
most all are speed/lead/close/stalk/handy types .....
who will ALL be looking at a gigantic endeavor ----
crowd/field size/noise/talent --- none have seen it YET....

talk to you later
