Add to the frightening nature of the figures, the fact that economies tend to react to a continuing increase in unemployment in a non-linear manner. At first, the economy more or less ignores the growing threat (as in say, late 2000, or 2001) but later it over-reacts (savings rates rise, consumers stop buying anything except "the necessities", etc.). I think we are just "crossing over" right now. (NG)_
