I'm not so sure your dimissal of VIP as a competitor (on XMSR thread) to Satellite radio should be given with such a broad brush.

Perhaps it isn't in the very long term. But in my experience, technologies that work are those that are most sensible for the task at hand. Just looking at IP, the way it works, its strengths and limitations, it is difficult to see that it will ever (ever in MY life, at least) form the basis for this kind of data stream; satellite is perfectly suited to the task, whereas IP does not appear to be.

Obviously, some evolution of IP could change this; but based on the rapid progress of IPv6 <g> this could take a little time.

I'm curious -- what do you see as potential benefits of using IP for this purpose? That is, why would we move away from satellite feeds toward IP?

(BTW -- This kind of transition HAS happened in the past -- very quickly, in the late 70s/early 80s LD companies moved from satellite to Fiber -- so I agree that these kinds of technological changes can occur; at this point I just don't see why anyone would be thinking about it...)
