I did not start out with anything against GWB. I have come to the conclusion that the direction he has chosen for US foreign policy is driven by a group of very controversial ideologues who have squashed the role of the State Department and put the Pentagon in charge of foreign policy -- and an extraordinarily dangerous foreign policy at that. I became alarmed when Cheney set out to win over our "allies" (now our former allies) by basically telling them that we were the world's only superpower and we would reserve the right to invade and conquer any nation that we chose to destroy and install governments more to our liking -- and that Iraq was to be our first target. I was alarmed when it became our official policy under the Bush Doctrine. And I am alarmed by the implications of creating a global environment where hatred, distrust and disrespect for the United States is now the norm. I am alarmed by the implications of all of the above for our National Security in terms of a likely rise in terrorism down the road along with a nuclear arms race. I no longer have any respect for GWB and sincerely hope that when his term as President comes to an end that he will be peacefully ejected from the White House in the usual manner -- an election. Nothing that the Democratic Party has done lately has given me much hope -- but right now I would far prefer benign incompetence to the hyperactive incompetence of GWB.
