Sir: Pakistan today is hostage to the half-baked idea of “Pan-Islamism” or “the ummah”. The students in the O Level History class I teach ganged up on me for suggesting that more people had died in Karachi over the last two years than in Palestine. Of course most of them couldn’t tell where Palestine was on the map.

It is easy to rile up ordinary Pakistanis about Jerusalem, Arabs, and the grand Jewish conspiracy. Politicians have made good use of this sentiment. Perhaps the first one to use it was Bhutto, who fashioned himself as some sort of an Islamic Napoleon seeking to unite the Islamic world under his leadership.

It is time we Pakistanis woke up and smelt the coffee. The Pakistani nation is under no obligation to be tied to the archaic ideology of Pan Islamism. Instead of being swept away by emotion and the idea of the Islamic brotherhood, let us concentrate on Pakistan. Our objective should be to strengthen our country and lead it towards peace and prosperity. Pakistan first, second and last!
