10:40 ET FLIR FLIR Systems defending against SARS (52.80 +1.30)
JP Morgan believes that co is experiencing unanticipated demand for its handheld thermography systems as a result of the SARS outbreak in Asia. These devices, which cost $15,000 to $60,000, can be used to detect temperatures and variations in temperature at a distance, and are being used to scan travellers' faces for signs of fever. A report in the Straits Times indicates that Singapore is in the process of deploying 50 cameras (ST Electronics and FLIR both cited). JP Morgan thinks that nations outside Asia will be compelled to make investment in thermal imaging devices.

12:56 ET Market volume tracking at best levels of the year
Total volume traded is notably heavy to this point, tracking at record levels for calendar 2003. Whether today marks a new high will depend on the second half of this Friday session, which typically experiences a more pronounced drop off in afternoon trading. The Nasdaq has just surpassed the 1.0 billion share mark and could push 2.0 billion shares for the day. NYSE volume is also strong with 850 million shares traded to this point in the session.

FWIW, imo WiFi phones will soon be a killer app, since they can assimilate, basically, all apps (voice/data/video) in basically all non-rural locations. W'less switches like Vivato and mesh boxes like MeshAP can blanket a city w/o licenses, and obsolete a few hundred bil in spectrum license fees.

What's still needed is a handheld multimedia device, which hasn't been offered yet, but the chips are there so it won't be long. You'll then be able to self-install your tv, phone and broadband net w. a box you get in the mail.

The 802.16 protocol provides multidimensional w'less access (pt-pt, peer-pear, mesh, pt-multi-pt) among low and high-bandwidth users. MeshAP is self-installing freeware neighborhood node for $400. Etc.
