Then I guess Putin is more intelligent than Sharon.

Or maybe Sharon does not really want peace but to continue expanding into the Palestinian territories, while dallying the international community with the likes of "Oh I cannot deal with Arafat!".

Any other theories?

More Israeli concessions, though a total failure in the past

I am not talking about "concessions". I am talking about getting the hell out of there and letting normal people, the general populace breathe. And have a life. And a country.

Don't you see that is what they want? And that is why they are supporting the extremists? I have never been the master of empathy, but even I can understand that...

Once they have a life with reasonable hopes of relative prosperity for their families, Israel will just have a handful of extremists, who want the destruction of Israel but isolated from the general population, to deal with. That is how Putin is dealing with Chechnya. And it's working. That is how Turkey dealt with PKK, after years of military hardball that did them ZERO good.
