At one point "common sense" dictated the Earth was flat.

Really? Common sense would make one wonder why a government that has spent $10 Trillion over the past 50 years on defense, can't even defend it's own capitol in 2001? Common sense would make one wonder why the military couldn't scramble jets to defend DC from a plane that had taken off from DC and unexpectedly turned around over Ohio and hit the Pentagon over an hour after the WTC was struck? Common sense would make one wonder why FBI warnings about arabs training in flight schools were ignored? Common sense would make one wonder why the President, the Secretary of Defense, and Head of the Joints Chiefs of Staff all acted as though nothing out of the ordinary was happening as the nation was facing an unprecedented terrorist attack? You seem like a pretty smart guy Jake, but if you just buy the official 9/11 story, then you obviously lack something known as common sense. The official story just has too many holes in it.
