I think the biggest issue with the unemployment rate is once you stop collecting unemployment you stop being counted despite the fact you have not found a new job.
I have some contacts at a company that makes equipment for the semiconductor industry and it just announced another round of layoffs.
Your reservist theory sounds plausible but I don't have any sound data to back it up.

I disagree, reservist holes will remain unfilled gladly
this is a boon to employers, who dont pay salary or severance
with product demand slack, why replace?
no way, let the hole remain until the guy comes back
if the guy is killed in battle, all the better
(just thinking cold thoughts here)
with battle death, no severance, no unemploymt insurance cost

remember Jack-in-Box announced that Georgia sales were hurt near military bases?
the war hurt sales from soldiers who went overseas
same applies to reservists
like the Hollywood cop in Iraq I saw interviewed
those spots will gladly remain unfilled by employers

if employers could lay off with zero severance or unemploymt insurance costs, you would see a few million more layoffs

furthermore, if reservist is replaced, then when he or she returns, then employer is left with a net new hire
no way is an employer gonna pursue that route

wait until this summer with United Auto Workers
contract renegotiations amidst severe overcapacity
gonna be wild and wooly
I see 400,000-500,000 layoffs in an agreement after a nasty strike
