More idiocy from Toronto Public Health: >>Report: Pinoy doctor in Canada battles SARS

TORONTO - A Filipino physician is in critical condition for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) at the Sunnybrook General Hospital in nearby North York, the Filipino Reporter web site reported Friday.

The web site, quoting Philippine Consul Edgar Badajos, said Dr. Nestor Yanga, a general practitioner, has been confined at the ICU of Sunnybrook. Yanga was reportedly infected by a patient who is a member of the Bukas Loob sa Diyos (BLD) Charismatic Group.

Manila newspapers earlier reported that Yanga had died from SARS.

At least 32 members of the Bukas Loob sa Diyos congregation are described as probable SARS cases, said Badajos, quoting a report from the city public health office. The quarantine of about 500 members of the prayer group has been lifted this week, Badajos told the Filipino Reporter.

Two weeks ago, Toronto health care officials belatedly notified and isolated BLD members who had been exposed at an April 3 funeral of a member, who is now thought to have died of SARS.

Many members of the group were not informed until well after the incubation period of the disease, usually about 10 days. Members could have exposed others outside the group.

The World Health Organization earlier Thursday added Toronto to its list of places that travelers should avoid because of an outbreak of the contagious disease.

Toronto is the first area outside China to be designated as a threat to international health because of SARS. It has shattered the city’s image as a safe place to visit and live.

The metropolitan Toronto area, home to many Filipino immigrants, had 136 probable cases Tuesday, including the 32 BLD cases reported to the consulate.
