From Chimps point of view, it was a spectacular success, but it was all calculated in advance:

1) They knew from intelligence reports that the war would be a cake walk, since there was no armed forces to speak of there and certainly no significant amount of WMDs.

2) A quick painless war would give the impression that something was being done on the War against terrorism and that Chimp was a "man of action". Few casualties would occur and the co-opted press would hide all the nastiness of war (For the sake of keeping national morale at a high).

3) "Winning" the war on terrorism would certainly boost Chimps standing in the polls.

4) Chimps friends could profit from lucrative contracts to rebuild Iraq and of course Oil.

5) Chimp could install a more US friendly "leader" in Iraq while waiting for democracy to break out (we're still waiting on that in Afghanistan).

Was it quick? No question on that! For some reason, Saddam took a hike leaving a massive power vacuum and no command and control structure in place. The Iraqi forces were also told by their departing leadership to lay down their arms! I wonder what sort of deal was brokered between Saddam and the US? The writing was on the wall for Saddam and I'm sure he was interested in finding a safe way out.
