<<I've never been there, but I recall some folks I met who had been there.. >>

I spent a week in Grafenwöhr for war games when the 581st ambulance company was attached to a MASH unit. I had a license that went through deuce and a half so I drove the wrecker/PLL truck and towed the gas pod. My job was to basically pump gas and hand out parts for a half an hour in the morning and evening, the rest of the time my job was going for gas and stay in hiding. They wanted the gas pod far from the troops.

I found a Command Sergeant Major that had been "captured" by our side that I knew from living in the BOQ. I got him released into my custody to take to another area for interrogation. We switched sides depending on who stopped us. I will say that it is a huge area and talking to the people, the Infantry and Armor people had a harder attitude than the medical people did.

The winch was broken on the wrecker and I had to pick up 2 broken ambulances. Two tow bars, 18 wheels on the ground and we took a wrong turn in the middle of the night in a small German village. I had our proper motor Sgt. with me then. Turn here, oops dead end. Back it up he says. Right. I'll say when the people of the village woke up the next morning they were helpful in getting us turned around.

Hawk,
I have been to Graf a few times.
Fired some of what was then the new TOW missile with a new special night sight in 1973.

Also participated as an SF recon team leader for a few armor exercises...and some special training for 2-6 Infantry Battalion which was stationed in Berlin but was in Graf for training.

But I have not been there except once in the late 70s (maybe 79) since.

Tours in Germany will never be volunteered for if Graf becomes home base.

On the other hand maybe that is the plan...Perhaps Germany (like Korea) becomes a short tour. And perhaps our German contingent (like Korea) gets reduced to 36,000 or less.

Edit...My buddy just reminded me that I was at Graf in the early 60s too...around 64. Was hard to get a Bier there then.
