The Russian Jews I have met seem to dispute that. It seems they used the word "Jew" is a context meaning un-Russian. One of them was telling me how when he arrived in America, in response to "Nationality?" he answered "Jewish" When he was told that is his religion and that his nationality was Russian, he was surprised. In his words, "I thought really?! Can a Jew be also Russian?!".
