I believe Empire Maker deserves to be the favorite, but I would not bet him at anything less than 7-2 (which I am not going to get). As far as I am concerned, he hasn't done enough to prove his clear superiority in order to justify a bet at short odds in a large field of improving 3 year olds that often produces unexpected trips, brand new peaks, and shockingly dud performances by top horses etc... He is the most likely to improve and develop into really top horse, but I prefer getting paid for anticipating such improvement and not having it built into the price. All that said, most of the rest of the contenders seem flawed in one way or the other - which is probably the biggest reason EM will probably be the solid favorite. I guess I like Ten Most Wanted as the 2nd most likely winner, but he also appears to attracting attention and as my 2nd choice in this huge field, I would require in the neighborhood of 7/8-1 to get really excited. After that, I believe I am really fishing among horses that are either suspect at the distance, lacking in preparation for 10 furlongs, lacking in ability to get the job done without a lot of improvement, unlikely to improve etc.... I still believe the Santa Anita Derby field is of a higher quality than generally thought, but they all have questions marks in my mind. Brancusi seems to be getting no action for a horse who fits in with the second string contenders. It's not impossible. :-) I still think Indian Express ran a huge SA Derby. I am just a little suspect of his preparation for 10 furlongs. Buddy Gill is fine, but is also getting bet some and I have a question as to whether he is likely to improve today even though he fits. Peace Rules is getting bet a bit and is slightly suspect for 10 furlongs. Funny Cide ran well but is a little suspect at 10F. Finally, I am curious about how the Withers goes. New York Hero is coming out of the Wood and I'd like to see how he performs. That could be a clue about how good the Wood was. The track seems to be playing honest to slightly favoring closers. Good Luck all.
