Why wouldn't they want them? Other sports? From what I am hearing, the various schools of the ACC are conflicted. They all want Miami. But the other two schools to be chosen are what the ACC schools are conflicted about. One group wants to extend the ACC to the North to include Syracuse and BC for the TV markets they bring. However, this incurs greater travel costs for non-football sports, and there is no guarantee that BC and Cuse will bring fans to watch games against UNC, Wake, etc. I'm also not sure I buy the whole TV market argument either. I live in Boston and although Bostonians love their professional teams, BC is far down on the list of sports venues. The other group wants to expand within the same geography to include VT and WVU, as both schools will bring at least 10,000 fans to watch games against UNC, Maryland, etc. and travel expenses for non-football sports would not be increased. However, no new TV markets will be added. The sole driving force behind this plan is the added revenues from a conference championship game that a 12-team conference will bring. A compromise between the two plans - VT + either Cuse or BC is likely not going to happen because according to the first group, just adding Cuse alone makes them a lone Northeastern school. If they go north, they want both Cuse and BC. This is essentially what happened in 1999. The ACC schools agreed to add Miami and VT but couldn't agree on the third team, so the whole thing fell apart, and may fall apart again. As far as the University of Virginia, they are likely to back VT to the ACC. Their AD has hinted as such. The big picture is the NCAA driving toward a playoff. Sooner or later, the NCAA wants either six 16 team superconferences or eight 12 team conferences whose champions will play in an 8-game playoff, with the minor bowl games serving as the quarterfinal games, and the major bowl games serving as the semi-final games, and a rotating championship bowl. In this scenario, VT is well positioned to be included in a conference among the 96 Div-1 teams, but we may have to endure some pain first in order to get there.
