That's how empire works. Maoris didn't get defeated by the British. They chose to invest in and accept the British. It beat the local options of being beaten in the head with a mere on a regular basis.

The Maoris did deals, "Here's some land. If you live nearby, we'll be better off. It'll keep those Ngapuhi off our backs too because they won't want to fight the redcoats." So, the Maoris invested land, the Poms provided the technology, admin and all that stuff.

Same deal today. I provide my savings, the USA [and people from other colonies] provides the other half of the equation and we are in business for mutual gain. Keeps the Indonesians off my back too - they won't want to fight the USA. They'll want to get jobs with QUALCOMM and buy QUALCOMM phones.

There's nothing wrong with empire. If it's done right. So far, so good.
