It’s less a matter of putting our interests above those of others than of comparing long-term interests to short-term interests. The long-term desire to keep peace and to create a system where the interests of all are considered equally is often more important than getting one’s way at any particular moment.

If these things can within a diverse nation, they can happen within a diverse world, if enough people are willing to work to make them happen. That doesn’t mean they will happen, but I believe that they can.

Now wasn’t I the one you were calling a congenital pessimist?

"Congenital pessimist?!!" Did I call you that?! <Hoo><Hoo>

...Well if I did, it could only have been in reference to your views on our prospects for peace between Rumsfeld and Powell! <Haa><Hoo>

Seriously though Steven. I have no doubt that you, ...and possibly Jacob too, are quality human folk and you can both clearly take a pokin' without getting all bent out of shape. That's priceless in my book. ...It saves me a lot on my monthly "ammo bill." (See! I can't even take myself seriously! How the heck do you expect me to take you seriously!)

Any way,... I used to be a "congenital optimist" too, but then I found out that Jefferson was a slave owner/lover and the complications of optimism became just too much for me.

Now, the only thing I'm "optimistic" about is that our fraudulent financial markets will reach ridiculously outrageous heights once again.

...But if the BIG ROCK gets here first I am really going to be ticked! <vLg>
