Rock,
re:
Well, for one thing. Being the President of the United States, I would think the Secret Service would have an interest in ensuring his safety and calmly remove him to an undisclosed location as soon as it became clear that the WTC wasn't hit by accident. I mean, these guys are trained to take a bullet for the President, you'd think they'd want to get him out of harms way at the first sign of trouble. Not just let him continue reading to schoolchildren like a sitting duck. That would have really been a scandal if the President had been killed because the Secret Service was negligent in getting him to safety during an unprecedented terrorist attack.

I guess we view it differently. I remember the media hounding him about hiding. He flew to Barksdale AFB, Louisiana, then up to Offutt AFB, Nebraska. Too many people were laughing after Reagan was shot and Secretary of State Alexander Haig saying he was "in charge".

Were you expecting a nuclear device to go off in the weeks following? I was. Especially during the televised Bush speech at the Capital.

What would I have expected from Bush on 9/11? I would have expected him to quietly leave the school and take command of the situation like the Commander In Chief and make sure planes had been scrambled to defend Washington, DC and make a statement from an undisclosed location ASAP to reassure the American people that the government was doing all it could to prevent more terrorist attacks.

Fighters were scrambled and arrived too late.

Bush's behavior and the behavior of his top "defense" staff on the morning of 9/11 have me baffled?!? They acted like nothing out of the ordinary was going on. Ho Hum!

And, I do support the idea of shooting jetliners out of the sky. It was obvious from what happened in New York that these weren't regular hijackings in which negotiation would bring an end to it. These were suicidal hijackers who intended to crash their planes into buildings and kill people on the ground. The people in the plane were doomed anyway. Shooting it out of the sky would have saved lives on the ground and sent a message to would be terrorists that we don't mess around and will not tollerate another 9/11 style attack.

Well, I agree it is clear now what should have been done and what could have been done better.

55 minutes after the first plane crashed into the Twin Towers, the FAA grounded all air traffic in the United States. How many planes were still in the air? How many people and resources would you need to determine which ones were contemplating hostile intent?

Do we shoot down every airliner that is hijacked? Or just the ones that are piloted by Arab terrorists? I like the idea of security override remote control, but if I look at the current performance of kids hacking into everything, that is a long ways off.

Do we continue to shoot at every car running a checkpoint in Iraq?

It seems we shot down too many coalition aircraft with Patriots because of system failures; shooting down every airliner that is off course and cannot be verified is too much.

Just a difference of opinion and that is a good thing.

Steve

Wrong! Shooting them out of the sky would not matter to them. They would be in love with the idea of hijacking planes and forcing our own military to shoot down a jet filled with innocent civilians! Look how Iran played that same scenario when they sent a plane flying straight for our ships. We had no choice but to shoot it down.

I'm not saying that our military shouldn't shoot down a plane on a course like the 9/11 planes were. But once we start shooting them down, where do we stop? Leftist liberals are always saying that we should do something and then after it is done they scream that we had no right!

Leftist Liberals are a disgrace to America! A DISGRACE TO GOD AND OUR COUNTRY!
