Forget SARS, mystery bug claims 3 lives in Maharashtra

N. Ganesh

Mumbai, May 4: A myseterious fever is doing the rounds of Washala village near Kasara, Thane. Three persons have died here in the last fortnight. But you won’t spot any television crews. No screaming headlines announce the appearance of a new virus. No Health minister visits the area to reassure residents that the virus is under control.

Ironically, the symptoms of this viral fever are similar to that of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). Over the last few days, nearly 35 villagers have been infected by the bug, complaining of fever and other respiratory illnesses. But nobody seems concerned. Least of all, the district health officer. ‘‘Such illnesses are common during this time of the year,’’ reasons District Health Officer Dr B.R. Gholap. ‘‘We noticed that those who stay out in the hot sun are affected. The fever has not affected children staying home.’’
