Spain's Aznar to visit White House

From Chris Burns
CNN White House Correspondent

Hmmm. Wonder if we will cut him a "Free Trade" deal."

LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas (CNN) -- Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar, one of President Bush's closest allies in the Iraq war, will visit the White House on Wednesday.

Aznar will meet with the president and share a working dinner, the White House said in a statement.

''Spain stands among America's closest allies in the war on terrorism and the effort to bring peace and democracy to Iraq,'' the statement said.

''Spain is a leader within Europe, a valuable member of NATO and the U.N. Security Council and an important proponent of close trans-Atlantic relations,'' it added.

Spain is expected to be one of the countries providing troops for a stabilization force in Iraq as Washington seeks to reduce its force levels there.

Aznar backed Bush in the war despite polls showing an overwhelming majority of Spaniards against it. His conservative party faces municipal elections this month.

Karen,

Best get ready for that strategy, the one of depicting Bush as the captive of right wing extremists and, in addition, just finished the new Hersh article in The New Yorker, thanks to Bill's post, in addition the captive of a secretive cabal of Straussian academics, the neocons. well, then there's the captive of the rich scenario as well.

The case will hinge on a great deal of what happens between now and then. But bet on it being the centerpiece of the effort.

It will be fascinating to see how the various strategists move the pieces around to counter one another. Kerry has one of the great Dem strategists in Shrum; and, of course, Bush, has one in Rove.
