'Barely noticed in the US (except by the US timber industry on whose behalf this tariff was raised), it has boosted the level of popular anti-Americanism in British Columbia to one which really is comparable to those in the Middle East.'

Marcos,
Also Barely noticed in Canada are the heavy Canadian government subsidies for lumber production in violation of international treaties. These subsidies may keep your forest workers employed but they also enable you to ship and sell lumber at unfair, lower prices in the US...undercutting our own lumber industry.

Also barely noticed in Canada were the clear, direct and early statements that we would not tolerate this.
Also barely noticed were our promises to correct the problem with a tariff.

There is no legitimate way to tie this to the current terrorism problem or as a US response to a lack of Canadian support. This dispute began years ago. The tariff was imposed only after Canada refused to correct the problem and prior to 9/11.

On the other hand, one could argue that this was a form of financial terrorism perpetrated on the USA by Canada. GWB found an effective solution that did not involve the military. Bravo.

The continuing screams from across the northern border are a clear testament to the effectiveness of this elegant solution.
If the Canadians really want change...they know what to do.
