There is a strange undercurrent in Seinfeld though, exemplified in the occasional comment "We're trying to have a civilization around here", and in the continual review of points of etiquette. It may seem trivial to discuss the rules of making a phone call inquiring about someone's health, but actually, it is the sort of concern of which ordinary life consists: what is proper behavior in small contexts. In that way, the show is not quite cynical. It mixes cynical detachment and anxiety over making a faux pas. It yearns for a world which is fulfilling, and deals with its disappointment by making fun......
