Hi Peter,

Re: A sensationalist report like this makes me really angry.

NewsMax, the source of this rumor has a reputation for being an over-the-top tabloid. I used to get upset with some of their yellow journalism. Now I simply laugh it off. I've yet to see anything in that rag worth noting. :)

IMHO, tis better to laugh at them than to scream..... <g>

Nurses abandon China’s hospitals to escape Sars
timesonline.co.uk
To combat the problem in the capital’s hospitals, many workers have been given tenfold pay increases to persuade them to stay. The Beijing Star Daily said that the Xiong Ke hospital had increased salaries for some staff from £30 a month to £300 — but still they were staying away.
...The husband of a Beijing nurse who died of Sars said: “When I talk about my wife, I am very likely to say something negative about the Government and the hospital. She was cremated without my knowledge and they haven’t even allowed me to see the ashes. Everything has been done without the family. The hospital hasn’t even told us how she died.”
...To boost morale in the medical sector, the Government is celebrating doctors and nurses as popular heroes. State broadcast authorities have given instant approval to plans for a film with Gong Li, a Hollywood star, playing a nurse on the frontline of the fight against the disease.

<Surviving for 24 hours on a surface >

Peter, how long do bugs like Sars survive if they are in a hot, dry room?

Come next winter, dehumidifiers and hot element fan heaters might strip moisture droplets from the air quickly and dry out and kill Sars on surfaces and kill them as they are blown through the heating element. In winter, air falls below the dew point for long periods of time [which is why fungi and moulds do well during winter and in dark and damp conditions].

That's not much use where there's no electricity and conditions are crowded and so on.
