A quick comment on Bennett- When a man counsels against murder, and it is subsequently discovered that he is a murderer himself, that does not render his advice any less appropriate. An intense public discussion is going on about the worth of Bill Bennett's personal character. Fine and well for someone who, to paraphrase Buckley, has made such a strong bid for the moral attention of the Republic. But it seems opportunistic, and illogical, for the libertines among us the infer, suggest, or outright say that this incident destroys the value of Bennett's admonitions. They deserve to be evaluated on their own merits, and not on the basis of Bennett's personal failings, and even if, regrettably, he may no longer be the most effective voice for those principles.
