My defense was not of Bennett, nor even of his writings, but only that a rational mind will evaluate the worth of the writings on the basis of their own merit. That the writings may encourage conduct that is aspirational, even for the writer, might only enhance their value.

I wish that at least one person who is gloating over Bennett's difficulties and trying to use it as an opportunity to marginalize the significance of his work (not saying that's you)would recite at least one recommendation from the Book of Virtues that he/she finds objectionable. His triumphalist chorus of critics has been deafeningly silent on this point since the story broke.I've never read the book from start to finish. But the excerpts I've seen looked to me to be basic common sense and good judgment. Not the sort of thing against which anyone would want to publicly stand in opposition.

As to whether he should be knocked off his high horse. It may be. But there are those who would want us to unthinkingly throw out the baby (writings) with the bath water (the man).IMHO, that would be a mistake.
