Taiwanese Government Purchases Vialta Beamer Videophones to Fight SARS

Wednesday May 21, 7:30 am ET

Beamer Will Be Used to Help Doctors and Health Officials Safely Monitor SARS Patients

FREMONT, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 21, 2003--Vialta, Inc. (OTCBB:VLTA - News) today announced that the Taiwan Interior Ministry has purchased 3,000 Vialta Beamer(TM) videophones to help doctors monitor quarantined Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) patients. The initial 2,000 units are being distributed immediately among the 10,083 identified SARS cases in Taiwan deemed "grade A, most serious." Beamer will allow doctors and health officials to see their patients simply by calling them. The additional 1,000 Beamer videophones will be distributed later this month.

"We designed Beamer to give friends and family a more personal way to stay in touch with each other, and we are pleased that the technology is also being used to facilitate maintenance of important health guidelines in this time of crisis," said Didier Pietri, president and CEO of Vialta. "This is just one example of how Beamer's video capability significantly enhances the personal quality of a phone call, creating a much stronger bond in our efforts to stay connected."

Beamer instantly adds video to phone calls, allowing people to have a better, more personal way to see the people they care about, when they cannot visit them in person. Beamer works with any home phone over a standard (analog) phone line, and there is no additional cost to phone calls.

Beamer has received numerous accolades since it was launched in August 2002, including a "Good Buy" Award from Good Housekeeping magazine based on ingenuity, value and exceptional performance. Beamer also received the Consumer Electronics Association's 2003 "Best of Innovations" award in the telephone category for its value to users, aesthetics, contributions to the quality of life and Beamer's innovative qualities.
