<before Buffett's board (or any other board, for that matter) can make a material reduction in CEO compensation, there has to be widespread support and recognition and a tacit understanding in industry. >

And that won't happen, till common shareholders and workers end their passivity. Those two groups have been been hurt seriously in the last 4 years, while managements have frequently "managed" to avoid pain for themselves.

It's not just pay, it's a list of other not-so-obvious things, like stock option repricing. Details, that protect decision-makers from any downside of their own bad decisions. We have recently seen the disgusting spectacle, of airline industry management guiding their companies toward bankruptcy, while setting aside money to make sure management's pensions (but not worker's pensions) are protected. And keeping their own pay high, while demanding pay cuts from workers.

As long as workers and common shareholders put up with things like this, they get what they deserve. Shareholders can "vote with their feet", which is harder for workers.
