As I recall, Lincoln was almost universally panned at Gettysburg. He himself sat down saying, "that speech won't scour," meaning, it didn't work. Nobody was ready to appreciate a two-minute speech after two hours of Mr. Everett's rhetoric. I have read a contemporary newspaper account of the dedication of the graveyard at Gettysburg. They didn't even mention that the President gave a speech.

After reading some of Byrds comments, I'm not sure he can remember. Period.

We're all fortunate he can't remember as far back as Jackson.
