I run my own retirement plan and I'm able to put assets into a wide range of assets, pretty much anything you can buy at a broker.

Years ago a friend of mine tried to convince me that these 401s and IRA contraptions were a trap in that it made people make decisions about their money that they wouldn't have made if they had the wider choices available outside of the plans. I argued fiercely against that view because they get such a boost from the tax deferred nature of the accounts, but after watching what has happened in the last few years and the limited choices people have, I'm coming around to his view.
