They were late 60's early 70's. They were Dylan's band when he toured but made a pile of their own albums. "Up on Cripple Creek" was probably their biggest tune. Not really my style but they're Canadian so they were forced upon me.-g Robertson was the guitarist and songwriter.

If you want to see as well as hear the Band in their heyday (along with many of their peers), check out this film: mgm.com

Martin Scorcese shot it in 1976 and you could make a strong argument it's as good of a rock and roll concert film that exists. They made a 25th anniversary print in '01 that toured around the bigger towns.
