As you say the US has been corrupted in so many ways that it's hard, especially for a non-American like myself, to consider the country as a democracy these days. I think even Americans now regard the US as a republic rather than as a democracy. What particularly concerns me is that the "American" influence pervades the whole world, including South Africa. In fact, during the tidal wave of pan-Africanism which swept through Africa in the last few years, those of non-African descent who live in Africa, like myself, looked to America as a source of values and inspiration and, indeed, salvation from the barbarians. Today, I very much regret to say, that "well of inspiration" has dried up. Indeed, I see that George Bush is no different from Robert Mugabe --- in effect, an expedient, ruthless dictator who will do whatever he can to get his own way. He mocks democracy except when it suits him, as you say, likewise the UN, also treaties which the US, in fact, has been party to. And what I find even more distressing than that is the self-righteousness which the US administration adopts after behaving as war criminals. Yes, the US has proclaimed it will put the Iraqis on trial for crimes against humanity. Who, I might ask gave the US that right? Or, indeed, the right to make "unilateral" war against Iraq in the first place? There is no doubt that the present US administration has made a mockery of established international traditions, norms and values. rense.com Today, whether the Americans like to admit it or not, the US is unquestionably a fascist nation, indeed a tyranny, which will do whatever suits it and make war against anyone it chooses for whatever reason. I agree with you that the idea of democracy is merely a facade of convenience. In the circumstances, one has to feel pity for the American people. You wonder where it will all end. I am sure not very nicely --- in fact, it has hardly begun and it's awful.
