Applied Materials' July calls were active with much of the volume accounted by an institutional buyer of July 17.50 calls. It isn't clear what drove the seemingly bullish positioning; the call buyer likely is bracing for a strong performance from the chip equipment company over the next two months. Applied Materials has already gained about 13% over the past month and is scheduled to report quarterly earnings May 13.
